BOOK REVIEW: Stalking Jack the Ripper

jack

It’s time for another book review!

Today’s review is on the mystery YA novel titled Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco. As soon as I saw this book I was instantly intrigued. I have always been fascinated by the history of Jack the Ripper, and I love time-period novels. So this was basically a MUST READ for me!

The novel’s main character is Audrey Rose, a young girl who secretly apprentices with her uncle. During this apprenticeship, she is performing autopsy-like surgeries on the victims of Jack the Ripper. This is considered extremely improper for a young woman during this time. Her uncle also has another apprentice, a young man by the name of Thomas.

The bulk of the story takes place after Audrey Rose’s uncle is arrested for the Ripper murders. She and Thomas work together to find out who the Ripper really is, knowing that it could not possibly be her uncle.

I really enjoyed this book, and all of the mystery that it contained. I was completely surprised by who the Ripper actually turned out to be, and I think that is what I loved about this the most. Throughout the whole story I was convinced that the Ripper was one of two people, but I ended up being completely wrong! I love when a book is able to throw me off like that; it makes it that much more exciting!

I rated this book 4 out of 5 stars, and I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries, time-period pieces, and/or YA. There is a sequel to this which is titled Hunting Prince Dracula which I am BEYOND excited to read. Vampire stories are some of my all time favorites, and I can’t wait to see what that one has in store for me!

If you didn’t see my latest blog, I have recently started a BookTube channel on YouTube! I would love for you to go and check it out, and subscribe there as well 🙂 I will be posting a video review of this book on their very shortly, so look forward to that!

Book Review: The Reflections of Queen Snow White

A while ago author David Meredith reached out to me to see if I would be interested in receiving a free copy of his book The Reflections of Queen Snow White in exchange for an honest review. Due to life happening, it took me a while before I was able to start reading it. Even though I had it waiting for a while, I am so glad that I picked it up! I am a lover a fairytales, so I was very excited to receive this retelling of Snow White.

What happens after happily ever after?

That is the question that Meredith’s story answers. It takes place many years after the story of Snow White that we are used to hearing about. In this retelling, Snow White has a daughter who is about to be married, and her Prince Charming has unfortunately passed on. Snow White has been in a deep depression since her husband’s death, feeling as if there is no hope for her without him; that he was the one who made her strong.

The majority of the story actually tells of times between the wedding of Snow White and Charming and the time that the story takes place in. What I really enjoyed about this is that they are not just flashbacks that Snow White has on her own. These memories are revealed by the infamous mirror on the wall. I absolutely love this portrayal of the mirror. Usually in retellings of this tale, the mirror is seen almost as much of a villain as the Evil Queen. That is not the case for this one. I do not want to give away too much information about the story, so I will not say too much about the mirror. However, I will say that the mirror proves to be one of the most important characters in the story.

I could not put this story down! I finished it in two days, and that’s only because I had to work and sleep. Otherwise, it would’ve been finished in just one! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of fairytales! Thank you so much to David Meredith for this story!

If you would like to read it, you can get it from Amazon by clicking here! For a paperback copy it’s $5.99, for Kindle it’s $1.99, or if you have Kindle Unlimited you can download it for free! 🙂

You will definitely enjoy this wonderful story!

My Small Business Adventure

My Small Business Adventure

Starting something new can be a little scary. You don’t know what will happen, you don’t know if you will be successful. But you will never know the answers if you don’t try. You don’t know what a major success you could possibly be. These are the same thoughts that I recently had. For a while now I have been wanting to create my own small business; and this past weekend, I finally buckled down and began it.

I started my Etsy shop called The Bibliophile’s Emporium. I wanted to take my love for literature and great stories, and turn it into something tangible. For my first round of products, I decided to make candles inspired by The Lord of the Rings. This is one of my all time favorite series, and I was really excited to make these. I decided to start off with four different scents inspired from different locations in the story: Fangorn Forest, Grey Havens, Rivendell, and Lothlorien.

All of my candles are made from 100% soy wax, a hemp wick, essential and fragrance oils, and candle dye chips. Each candle is hand stirred and hand poured, so the color may be slightly off than what is pictured.

I chose the scents for each of these candles based off of what I imagine these places are like. For Fangorn Forest I chose the scents forest pine, fresh cut grass, patchouli, and sandalwood. For Grey Havens I chose the scents ocean breeze, vanilla, and sandalwood. For Rivendell I chose lavender, jasmine, and sandalwood. For Lothlorien I chose plumeria, magnolia, and forest pine.

I didn’t realize just how much FUN candle making could be! I can’t wait to expand this collection onto more great stories 🙂

What are your favorite stories that you would love to see turn to candles?

Nighttime Routine

Nighttime Routine

Consistency is one of the things in life that we all crave, in one way or another. Whether it be something as simple as having your two cups of coffee in the morning, or something as complex as needing to do the same exact activities each and every day. Something that I have recently started is having a nighttime routine. I struggle with anxiety and depression, and I’ve come to realize that having this nightly routine, this consistency, has actually helped me out a bit with those struggles. I decided to share what my routine is in hopes of providing inspiration for those with the same struggles as me.

I didn’t want my routine to take up too much time, because I wanted to make sure that it was something that I would be able to do each and every night. Here is my routine:

  1. Make myself a mug of herbal tea. Or, if I’ve had a really stressful day, it’ll be a glass of red wine.
  2. Wash my face and do a facial mask. The mask I will do every couple of days.
  3. Take at least 30 minutes to do something for yourself. For me, this is usually reading or journaling.
  4. Stretching. I do this right before I get into bed and I make sure to stretch my legs, arms, back, and neck.

It’s nice to have these few things to look forward to every night. I hope that this can be helpful to some of you looking to start your own nighttime routine, or if you’re looking to revamp the routine you currently have. If you do already have a routine, I would love to hear what yours is!

Book Review: “Three Dark Crowns”

Book Review: “Three Dark Crowns”

It’s time for another book review! I received Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake in my December OwlCrate box. If you don’t already know, OwlCrate is a monthly Young Adult book box that not only sends you a book each month, but also a few literary inspired items as well! To sign up, go here!

The main premise of the book is that each generation there are a set of triplet queens born. After they turn sixteen, only one of them can be the queen of the island, so it comes to a sort of fight to the death between the sisters. Each of the sisters have their own powers: one is a poisoner (ability to survive poison), one is a naturalist (has control over nature), and the third is an elemental (control over the elements).

I thought there was great character development with the three sisters throughout the whole story. I felt that I really got a sense of each of them and how they really felt about the process of ascending to queen.

There was slight hints of romances within the story, but the did not overpower the storyline. I think this is great, especially because the story is focused on three female leads. There are so many stories that have female leads that are focused around their love lives. It is refreshing to see a story that does not have such a focus on that.

The story definitely leaves on a HUGE cliffhanger! Luckily, book two will be coming out later this year! If you are interested in royal ascensions, sister relationships, and a taste of magic, then I recommend this book for sure!

If you have recently read a new book, let me know which one so I can try it out too! 🙂

Harry Potter MakeUp Brushes

Harry Potter MakeUp Brushes

Two of my loves have finally come together: Harry Potter and Makeup! When Storybook Cosmetics announced that they were going to be releasing these Potter inspired brushes, I could not contain my excitement. For so long, people have looked at fans of these series  as weird or geeky. Bringing the fandom into the beauty industry is such an amazing movement. This shows that you don’t have to fit into the stereotypical idea of what you should be like just based off of what you enjoy.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of these brushes. I did not expect them to be made from metal, and have a heavy feel to them. They feel extremely sturdy and durable, and I am not worried about them coming apart. And the bristles on the brushes are extremely soft! I love that even though there are only five brushes, the diversity of the types of brushes is perfect. I will admit, I have not actually used the brushes yet, due to the fact that I am not sure if I want to use them, or keep them as collectibles. Either way, I am extremely happy to have purchased  these while I could.

Storybook  Cosmetics has so many amazing products that will be coming out this year! While they will not be doing another release of these specific designs, they do have five brand new wand designs that are coming out! Following their Instagram page is the best way to keep track on their updates. You can follow them here!

Let me know of any cool Harry Potter or makeup items you come across as well! 🙂
